The basement apartment is a semi-finished living space — tile fitted almost right, posters over off white walls poorly lit with a full kitchen and old conventional oven, both shelves filled with neat rows of glass jars containing different, random combinations of nuts and bolts.

Mike upends a jar over a t-shirt laid on the floor and begins to dig. He almost immediately holds up a generic-looking bicycle bolt.

“This is the old binder bolt off of my first Trek road bike.” He cannot be enough places at once. He begins to dig again until we find our bolt. Almost immediately he begins scooping the pile back into the jar with both hands, spreading bolts out then picking up the corners of the shirt to shake a new pile into place.

”This is a trick I learned from my father…Almost everything I know about mechanics I know from watching other mechanics — and then fucking it up myself!”

For better or worse Mike is this person for me. While he does know more ways to improve a bicycle using only a hacksaw and electrical tape, I almost always deal with his advice knowing two summers prior I lay in the middle of Charles St. belly down watching my read wheel fall lazily over my head following our first project together.

Mike tonight is giddy. He is high and forgetting each minute before when he planned to find the bolt, take a bong hit, find the seat clamps, take a bong hit.

In these two years I have known Mike, he has always sounded like he was getting away with something. He shows me the building’s furnace room is in his apartment, crammed neatly with bins stacked on bins of bicycle full of bicycle parts.

“They say, ‘leave 3 ft. between the furnace and your things…Or! 6 inches.”

Alternate Mike who never quit alcohol or cigarettes and at 40 has an uncontrollable smokers laugh. Instead Mike laughs like a kid in awe with himself. I wonder how long Mike goes between social interactions.

In descending order, heroin, homelessness and prison are the life points Mike will readily talk about or lecture upon. The difference between a talk and a lecture has to do with the number of hand gestures and stomping routines he will go through divided by the number of times he will yell a rhetorical question close faced or at least loud enough to be equivalent to a kid in your arms getting moderately excited over something stupid. Any resulting number over .5 is a lecture, and it is by far the more desirable choice for any self-respecting individual at odds with sharing with an angry old man their inner scumbaggeries.

Presumably homelessness is what most would immediately think of talking to Mike, or most other messengers for that matter. I believe Mike says he did two winters outside, though with his history what constitutes homelessness versus usually junkie behavior may change things. Undoubtedly the most useful advice from Mike comes out of homelessness, especially winter tips:

1. Don’t put shopping bags on your feat in the cold rain, use newspaper. You’ll sweat in the plastic and get cold.

2. Make sure you buy sneakers a half size larger in the winter, to give more room for extra sock layers.

3. Don’t spend too much money.

This is his bin of cut-by-hacksaw bicycle parts:

”I got too much shit, Andrew…” He explains, slow, like he were scratching an itch.

The estimated work time this project of promulgated neurosis took is upwards two hours, arbitrary in all worlds and circumstances save a life in which the dump can only be visited every 6 months. A bin of pure waste at least a dozen people instantly in mind could make use of had it not all just born the brunt of Mike, assumed stoned and bent over in his dim apartment with a saw in his hand and time to kill.

Even his bong looks formed be a hacksaw despite all rationale. Reason does not apply to a man whose neighborhood holds four smoke shops but has instead made a piece using a glass jam jar and old metal piece that looks a little like a tire pressure gauge. I asked if I could take a picture and he said no photography was allowed in his apartment. By this point I have photographed about 85% of the space. In 20 years when the bins reach the ceiling and Mike has shrunk 2 inches in height I will return to photograph him bouncing from ladder to ladder, stomping angrily in between stacks.

He disappears into the bathroom and reappears with a tube of toothpaste.

“Here, you’re driving me crazy.”

”What?”

”Have you been drinking?”

”No..”

”Are you sure? You smell like you’ve been drinking whiskey, here,” too many projects, “hold out your finger.”

Like an idiot or a student I hold out my finger, and Mike squirts a pea of toothpaste on it.

I wouldn’t say I use “superstitions” to stay safe at work or anything, though I will say I haven’t had a major injury after almost two years as a messeger through the sheer power of addressing routine tasks through repeating specific ways of doing things, like washing my hands once a day for no reason, or never lying about wait time (easily exaggerated paid office sitting time).

Ten or so miles previous I stopped in a bike shop run by one drunk man who knew where I worked and who I worked with at “Baltimore.” Three times he said “he’s one of us,” the approximate number of times he said “ride free, its free to ride, man.”

I am still in deer survivalist mode. I am expecting a deer on my person soon. I have spent three and a half hours half lost in the woods after “sundown,” as the park sign says.

At a glance the smartest, most mentally equipped creature of the night to ever run and hide from an approaching shadow of a bicycle is the fox. Foxes, two of them, will at once turn off whatever path they are on in favor of making scarce. Whatever small dog or rabbit creature which is not shaped like a fox runs down the path in front of you before finally turning is less inclined towards cyclist survival.

Deer are everywhere animate pot holes at head height to destroy every movement within orbit of their statuesque violence.

If I had a drug habit this is how my mom would speak to me, with a voice inquiring the dead, wounded and starving. If I had $1 for every stranger at work to ask if I graduated, hold stake in a future, or just really ever go inside, i.e. own a private space away from approved places of gathering for the homeless, before we verbally high-fived.

Today, sandwich girls kept telling me to have fun and I lost years on my right shoulder life delivering a 50 ibs. box of paper to a stripper.

The episode of Bored to Death when Jonathan starts teaching his workshop class and the first story idea is from a fingerless glove wearing dude who stares at the floor. “It’s about a bicycle courier who ends up fighting crime— or a crime-fighting bike courier or.”

Messenging, messenging, messengering, messenging.I make fun of the other messengers for talking about work and only work for hours, even after work. But I fall into it too sometimes. Everyday is a new day, except when it isn’t, and the same jobs come in slowly and you just sit, dream and drink coffee until all is forgotten. Everyday more or less I feel surprised this is my life. That I would forget how to write, and learn instead how to make an approachable vs. approachable face, i.e. you haven’t said a face-to-face word in 8.5 hrs. but crave a question about the weather; or the world should burn, suits first.

I have felt on edge set to kill for 16 hrs. today.
